OUR HISTORY
KRONOHÄKTET VÄSTERVIK ANNO 1871
1871
THE APPLICATION WAS CONSTRUCTED
The architect: Vilhelm Theodor Ankarswärd
Cost: SEK 81,817 and SEK 0.50
The detention was erected on 3 floors. In total, there were 54 light cells and two guard cells. It was open between the floors, so the prison guards had a great overview of the different plans.
THE MEANING OF THE RAILWAY
Prisoner transport
Many of the prisoners who were to be transported to Västervik came by train. Of course, they were not allowed to go in the normal compartment, but a cell wagon was attached on the regular train.
1905
WATER & DRAINAGE
Modernization
The Royal Palace of Stockholm granted permission to withdraw water and sewage pipes. There was no question of any drains for toilets, but the prisoners simply had to fulfill their needs in pots, Höganäs signed.
HEATING THE PRISON
A job for a prisoner
The prison was heated by fireplaces located on each floor, these would be kept alive. During the day, this was the task of the prisoners. The heating hatches for these fireplaces are still present and are located between each cell. At selected locations there were also tiled stoves. This form of heating was used until the 1960s, after which elements were installed.
1913 - 1915
BUILDING OF THE
GROUND FLOOR
Department of Forensic Psychology
In connection with this redevelopment, the mezzanine was again laid down by a wide corridor. Electric lighting was also installed, for a sum of SEK 510, between the second and third floors. In addition, the mental ward was provided with so-called hospital glass, 10mm thick.
1922
IMPROVEMENT OF LIGHTING
Larger windows
The cell windows were opened up on the mezzanine when there was too light in the cells. Now new windows of larger model were created.
1970-talet
LARGER REMOVAL AND EXTENSIONS
Better environment for the inmates
The workshop premises got a larger area, which improved the working environment. The prisoners also had access to a recreational room where they could play billiards and table tennis. The visiting department was also completed in 1978.
2011
THE OPENING OF THE HOTEL
Private takeover
The building was purchased by a private individual and after some renovation work, the hotel business opened in 2011.
The hotel currently has 51 rooms and is one
family owned hotel.
2007
NEW TIMES
Västervik 47 was closed
In October 2007, the Västervik 47 facility was moved to the Västervik Norra facility. This was not appreciated by everyone. Missing after the smaller facility where there was a more cozy and personal contact between interns and staff, the old prisoners told us.
